[Around twenty minutes later Aya arrives with a small cloth bag with tools inside. He isn't sure which one he would need, so he borrowed a few from the flower shop. In black jeans, black sneakers, and a white top, Aya stands outside, ringing the doorbell once.]
*Sonico hears the bell ring from where she is out the back, and she hopes that she can get to him quick enough before he decides to turn away. She jumps up, managing to brush at least some dirt from her knees, then heads through the house to the front door as quickly as possible.
Sonico swings the door open, standing there in a denim skirt with a fitted pink tshirt (complete with cat print) and a piece of metal in her hand*
Looks can be deceiving. [The instructions may be simple, but with so many parts, it can easily turn overwhelming. Assembling it with two people will go a lot more smoothly.] Let's get the base started. We'll need that long rod [he points to it] and some screws.
[Taking the long pole, he places it into the appropriate spot in the base. He looks to the diagram in the instructions, then to the choices Sonico gives him before taking a few of them from one of her hands.]
I'll take another piece that twists together another pole and connect them, so the next step is putting the fabric of the parasol together. Do you think you can get started on it? I'll help when I'm done with this.
*And so Sonico sets to work. She falls into complete silence as she does so, such is her determination to do a good job. It seems to require some effort on her part, but it's nearly complete soon enough*
[Getting the twisting part to hold the pieces together, so they could move up and down, Aya shakes it a bit to test that he did it right. Nodding in approval, he goes to join Sonico and help with the parasol. He almost doesn't want to interrupt her, seeing how she's deeply concentrating, but he did promise to help out. One by one, he secures each remaining peg to each rod.]
I think it's good that we can learn to put the fabric on now. It can be washed in the washing machine whenever you want.
It's a bit hard to have a garden in Tokyo, anyway. [He doesn't expect many people to have gardens, but some rooftops had a space to plant things, so there's that. Once the fabric is fitted onto the skeleton of the parasol, Aya holds it up.]
You'll have to attach the arm to the pole, then the parasol to that arm with that part. [He points over to a small part that is L-shaped and could swivel around.]
That's true. And that's why I feel so grateful to have a garden here.
*And therefore all the more determined to make a good job of it. She picks up the arm and the pole, then sets about carefullly putting them together, and reaches to do the same with the other part*
[Of all his years, he's never been asked a question like that one. He pauses in whatever he's doing and looks to Sonico as if caught in headlights.]
Uh...well...it was...a sort of hobby at first. [He resumes his task of holding the pieces together.] So when I became good at it, I just stuck with it.
*Why are you staring at her like that, Aya? That's a perfectly normal question to ask. She blinks at his expression, and decides that maybe she shouldn't press any further at this one*
I see. That makes sense, to keep doing what you're good at. As long as you enjoy it.
*Finally, the pieces were all assembled and Sonico gave a nod of approval*

And thanks again for the parasol. It's going to be great!
*In the garden, by the pansies, the box and all the parts are carefully laid on the grass*

Date: 2017-07-17 09:30 pm (UTC)I'm glad you like it. If you decide to plant other flowers that are sensitive to sunlight, then you can protect them, too.
[Once in the back garden, Aya could see how Sonico is having a time with assembly. At least all the parts are carefully laid out.]
Do you have the instructions?
(no subject)
Date: 2017-07-17 09:45 pm (UTC)*Sonico sinks back down onto her knees and reaches for the instructions which she put folded up beneath the original box*
They are probably really very simple but...
*She looks quite bashful as she hands them to him*

There are these ones, or these ones.

That is so convenient! I had no idea.
*She sits back on the grass and looks around at the various plants she has put there*
I didn't have a garden in Tokyo, of course, so all of this is new to me.

There. All finished.
